We Are Loureiro: Maureen Regan
August 15th, 2024
Maureen Regan, Financial Manager at Loureiro, has played a pivotal part of the company since 2008. Starting off her career with Loureiro as an accounting clerk, she quickly advanced to assistant financial manager in 2011, and in 2013, she became the financial manager for the Engineering company. Based in Florida as a remote worker, Maureen says her day-to-day responsibilities are varied and fulfilling.
“The focus of my efforts are on the Engineering company, and my days involve a variety of work – which is what I find most rewarding,” says Maureen. “From overseeing transactional work, to providing data and reports to coworkers, to implementing policies and making changes – I get to do a lot of different things.”
Maureen's educational journey is unique, with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from UMass Amherst and another in accounting from CCSU. Her path to accounting was driven by a change in passion.
“I worked in engineering for around five years, and I found it interesting, but I wasn’t as passionate about it as I thought I would be. I started to take some business classes, including a class in financial accounting, and I fell in love with it. I love working with numbers. I decided to get a second degree in accounting, and ended up switching into the field.”
The transition from engineering to accounting was smooth for Maureen, as she found that the skills she utilized in engineering were highly applicable in her new field.
“I was very drawn to Loureiro because of the different engineering services they provide. Though I wasn’t going to be working in engineering, I was happy to be able to support it in the accounting department,” says Maureen. “Engineering taught me analytical skills that really help me in the accounting field – troubleshooting, problem-solving, attention to detail – skills that were fine-tuned while working in engineering.”
For Maureen, her love for learning and curiosity has been a driving force throughout her career.
“I remember shortly after starting at Loureiro, I told one of my accounting co-workers, ‘I want to learn everything you do.’ Over the next few years, I learned every aspect of the job, and now I’m able to assist people with pretty much all their needs because I’ve had my hands in everything.”
Maureen acknowledges that accounting might not seem glamorous to everyone, but for those with a passion for numbers and detail-oriented work, it’s a fulfilling career.
“I’ve heard people throughout my life refer to accounting as boring. There are repetitive aspects to it, such as billing cycles that start over every month, and there is a lot of transactional work. It’s not always the flashiest work, but if you like numbers and attention to detail, it’s a great field. You’re providing an important role for the company to give managers necessary information to make important decisions. Don’t pursue accounting just because you think you can make a good living; do it because you’re interested in numbers, financial statements, and how your work supports the company.”
In May of 2020, Maureen transitioned to remote work and moved to Florida, where she lives just ten minutes from the beach. Loureiro’s flexible remote work program has allowed her to continue her work seamlessly, though she visits Connecticut a couple of times a year.
Outside of work, Maureen enjoys fitness activities, walking, and exercising. She also finds time for reading and exploring her interest in nutrition, and her passion for learning and staying active continues to shape her both personally and professionally.
