Manchester, CT
When a 10’ pipe under I-384 in Manchester deteriorated and no longer functioned properly, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT) awarded Loureiro for a $3 million revival, requiring as little traffic disruption as possible.
Before the excavation, Loureiro had to build two access roads averaging approx. 650 ft. on the North and South sides of I-384 in order to safely access the 10’ CMP pipe and maintain earth on either side. Cofferdams will be installed at the inlet and outlet side of the pipe with an additional bypass pipe to divert the water. To restore the corrugated metal pipe, it will be relined with a 8” concrete invert, plus CIP headwalls and wingwalls at the inlet and outlet. Once the cofferdams are removed, the access roads will be installed and landscaped.
While the site construction and concrete work are standard for Loureiro, the unique support of this type of excavation required the close collaboration with subcontractors in learning their processes and understanding their approach to expertly establish the groundwork needed for a safe and successful project.
